About Our Company
History
Royal Oak Design was founded in 1987 by Sylvia E. Lyons. Sylvia is a licensed landscape architect in California (RLA #1549) with over 35 years experience in commercial, industrial, residential, and recreational projects. She earned a B.S. degree in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly, Pomona. For 14 years prior to starting her own practice, she worked for two well-established Orange County firms focusing in design, coordination, and plan preparation for numerous parks and other governmental projects -- as well as housing developments, restaurants, business parks, and private residential designs.

For commercial projects, we work to enhance the architectural development while providing water-wise design in plantings, hardscape, and irrigation.
We pride ourselves on clear, legible plans that meet all City or County requirements while also keeping an eye on maintenance and longevity of the landscape.
About the Design Process
Regardless of the size and type of your project, the first step in the design process is a visit to the site. This visit allows us to review not only existing site conditions, but also the surrounding areas. We identify problem areas such as grade changes, drainage issues, and existing trees both on and adjacent to the site.
We discuss the location of major elements such as patios, pools, water features (for residential designs), and entry statements, screening, parking lot shading, and enhancement of architectural features.
Design review is a key component, especially for residential clients, which allows us to fine-tune the design. The ultimate goal is landscape design that suits both the site conditions and the client’s needs and desires.
